Le FMI est la première institution internationale qui commence a prendre en compte le pic pétrolier dans sa planification économique. En 18 mois ils ont publié trois rapports :

• Oil and the world economy, some possible futures 
• “The future of oil : geology versus technology” 
• “World Economic Outlook: tensions from the two-speed recovery, Chapter 3 Oil Scarcity, Growth and Global Imbalances”
